Been thinking about this for a while.
This xanga is officially dead.
Talk about an anti-climax.

Nihilist Nobody

Today I was reading some more of "Grendel" for AP English, and I have to say I'm really liking it so far. But what I like even more is that we get to discuss it in class. I remember last class when Mr. Izzo handed everyone a paper that defined nihilism, existentialism, and solipsism. I was in a class surrounded by some of the smartest people in the school, and almost none of them knew what those terms meant. Imagine my surprise when some people actually laughed when they read about nihilism. For those who don't remember:

"Nihilism is a philosophical position which argues that the world, and especially human existence, is without objective meaning, purpose, comprehensible truth, or essential value. Nihilists generally assert some or all of the following: there is no reasonable proof of the existence of a higher ruler or creator, a "true morality" is unknown, and secular ethics are impossible; therefore, life has no truth, and no action is known to be preferable to any other."

Funny thing is, I consider myself a nihilist. I really want someone to try and tell me why it's something to laugh at. It's really rather depressing, but I'm not looking to be blissfully ignorant -- I just want truth. I'm the guy who reads this stuff in the evening when his homework is done just because he wants to know more. My classmates are only concerned with knowledge that their teachers want them to know. I find that quite annoying. How many of us are in higher level courses because we seek knowledge? Most of us just want their transcripts to look good. I suppose being smart is never a bad thing, but it is unfortunate that my peers only want to know about their core curriculum and whatever extra thing they do (music, theater, singing).

Even worse was how I identified with the monster Grendel himself. I still don't think he's a monster. He's just a lonely observer trying to find truth in an unforgiving world. What makes us monsters?

I know that I've imagined love before
And how it could be with you
Really hurt me baby, really cut me baby
How can you have a day without a night
You're the book that I have opened
And now I've got to know much more...

My next entry will be really fun...

Beside You In Time

I had this  rather good idea for an entry where I compare my current self to my freshman self. However, I am about to go bowling in Hilton with a couple of good friends. Afterwards, I'll be watching The Matrix Reloaded in high definition (IT IS NOT BORING!). BTW, if you haven't seen it yet, check it out on TNT tonight. It's full of action and a confusing plot. Also, NIN has a new concert coming out on DVD, HD-DVD, and Blu-Ray. Dude, NIN in HD is awesome! I leave you with screenshots because I like pictures.

Supermassive Black Hole

I'm bored out of my mind, and I have a horrible allergy problem right now. Let's just randomly  talk about stuff that I've been thinking about, okay? We've done this before.

I. ] I've been fortunate enough to get some incredible music over the past month or so. 1st, let's go over the theme songs I've gottten:

-A. Mission: Impossible. This may just be one of the best theme songs of all time. Every time I hear that song, I want to run around, stare like a badass, and kick some ass.

Tom Cruise LOL WTF!

-B. Superman the Movie. Let me just say right now, on record, that John Williams is the best composer in Hollywood, hands down. He's done Jurassic Park, Superman, Star Wars, and many others. This guy pisses brilliance!

II. ] Of course, I've also gotten some excellent full albums courtesy of albumbase.com. This website rocks long and hard. I'll let you make the pun there. Let's go through some albums (very fast because I have a short attention span!):

-A. "The Fat of the Land" by The Prodigy. Unknown to you, I happen to enjoy some good Big Beat music every now and then. "The Fat of the Land" is considered a very important electronica album, so I figured I'd download it. This album is really tight even though it was made 9 years ago. The songs have alot of energy to them, so it's a great distraction from my normal playlist (read: Rage Against the Machine/ NIN). If you wanna know what this album is like, then preview the song "Smack My Bitch Up" on iTunes. B+

-B. "Black Holes and Revelations" by Muse. I'm still not sure how much I like this band, even though I'm leaning towards the "They're pretty damn good" side of things. They're like Queen + Radiohead with random rock bits strewn about. This album sounds pretty nice, and I consider it better than their last album, "Absolution". Everyone should check out the song "Supermassive Black Hole" on iTunes and you'll hear the kind of catchy tunes that they make. B

-C. "Legion of Boom" by The Crystal Method. What can I say? Great Big Beat music with a rock feel. Like "The Fat of the Land", the music here is energetic and enjoyable to listen to. However, the albums do not sound the same. Check out "Weapons of Mass Distortion" on iTunes to get the feel of the album. B

III. ] Clubs that I'm in this year:
- Environmental Club (lame-ass overcompensating preps).
- AMP (Very cool people (for the most part)).
- SADD (haven't met yet)
- APC (hoping to become president)
- Aviation Club (pretty cool, and only 6 of us)
- Art Club (like i'm going to decorate shit)

Well folks, that's all for today. Come back next week for another exciting installment of Mike Rambling!
